Scuba Diving Puerto Rico

Scuba diving in Puerto Rico provides a thrill and adventure unmatched by anything else. SCUBA means “Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus”.  Because the diving environment in different areas of the island has unique characteristics it gives Puerto Rico a wide variety of diving, both in terms of the underwater terrain and the diving conditions.
The water temperature in the coast of Puerto Rico average about 80º F all year-round with a visibility up to 60 feet and depths of dive sites ranging between 30 feet to over 70 feet.

Come scuba diving in Puerto Rico in the south/south-west for an exciting adventure and explore the underwater beauty found in the island. Try La Parguera in Lajas for its 20 miles long wall.
Located six miles offshore, La Parguera Wall is a giant coral reef extending more than 20 miles and dropping at a maximum depth of 1,500 feet. Fingers of reefs reach for the depths and green morays and sea turtles, as well as elkhorn and black coral are all common here.
West of Mayaguez area are the offshore islands Mona and Desecheo. For divers willing to brave the challenging sea conditions of the Mona Passage, Mona Island is 45 miles west of Puerto Rico or about a 6 hours boat trip and considered by many the Galápagos of the Caribbean.
This one has to be organized as a 2 or 3 days camping excursion, for which a permit has to be obtained from the Puerto Rico’s Department of Natural Resources.
There are more than 250 species of fish and some of the healthiest coral growth in the region. Mona also straddles the migration route of whales, dolphin and game fish on the move between the Atlantic and Caribbean.
Desecheo island, with its colorful fringing reefs and massive underwater pinnacles, it is virtually unknown as a dive destination. Scuba diving and snorkeling at Desecheo Island boasts 100 to 150 foot visibility consistently.
Located about nine miles west of Aguadilla and 12 miles west of Rincon, and the journey will take from 30 minutes to one and a half-hour.
Desecheo island contains a Federal Wildlife preserve, and is host to dozens of dive sites. Its well-preserved marine ecosystem makes this a unique diving spot for all underwater enthusiasts.
Scuba diving, being a visual underwater experience, doesn’t include altering the underwater habitat in any way. Divers shouldn’t touch anything, either a plant, a cute animal, or even just an object under water that could have easily become the home of an animal over time.

Surf School

  The Caribbean's Best Surfing

When booking your accommodation, you should probably look for something on the north, northwest or west of the island where the breaks are the best and most consistent. Of course there are some good surf spots in other parts of the island too. Some of the more famous surf spots are: Hollows, Gas Chambers, Aviones and Tres Palmas. Because it is so warm in Puerto Rico, it is not necessary to pack in a wetsuit. Surfing in Puerto Rico is usually quite a safe activity and to date there are no reported instances of shark attack around the island. However there are other minor irritations and dangers to watch out for. One of these is sea lice, which are small, ‘pepper-speck’ sized jelly fish that can get trapped in your clothing and irritate your skin. The sea lice problem in Puerto Rico is certainly not nearly as bad as it is in Florida, but it helps to always wear a lycra vest and to change completely before getting in your car to drive. Swim wear should then be completely washed before it is used again. Any stings or irritation can be easily treated with hydrocortisone or Benadryl cream. If you are worried about sea lice, it is usually best to stay out the water for a while if there has been a strong north-easterly wind blowing for several days. It is also a good idea to keep an eye out for sea urchins which may cause similar problems.
Another potential danger comes from the reef-type break which is so common around Puerto Rico. Most breaks are reef breaks and, if you surf during low tide you will be more likely to suffer cuts and scratches from the reef. Higher tides are better, but you can still be injured if you ride a wave which is big enough to push you down to the reef if you come off your board. Inexperienced surfers should watch out for riptides which can pose a threat to both beginners and experienced surfers if they are big enough. The only other thing you will need to know is that body boarding is much more popular in Puerto Rico than surfing is, so most of the lineups are dominated by body boarders. It would be totally unnecessary and may even cause you trouble if you were to drop on them so respect their space at all times. You should also respect the environment and try not to litter.

 Kite Surf Puerto Rico

Kite Surfing in Puerto Rico

Surrounded by the crystal clear Caribbean Water, with stunning sandy beaches fringed by swaying palm trees, Puerto Rico is a prime tourist destination attracting water-sport enthusiasts from all over the world. Surfing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking and windsurfing are offered at many of the beaches around the country. Kite surfing, also referred to as kite boarding, is an activity that is becoming increasingly popular among holiday makers looking for a new water-sport challenge.
Puerto Rico has some incredibly beautiful spots to enjoy kite surfing, with different surf conditions offering varying degrees of difficulty. Some of the best flat-water kite surfing in the Caribbean is found around the three islands of La Parguera de Lajas – Cayo Caracoles, Cayo Enrique and Cayo Majimo. This area receives trade-winds from the east, which increase in strength as they travel along the southern coastline of Puerto Rico, reaching a peak along the desert hills of La Parguera and offering kite surfers consistent wind throughout the day and virtually throughout the year. The islands are connected by reefs that block the wind in a manner that causes the water to be smooth, but allows the wind to give the kite incredible lift and the surfer a breath-taking adrenaline rush. These conditions are ideal for beginners and for those who want to work at perfecting their kite surfing skills. For experienced kite surfers who want the ultimate thrill of riding the waves, Puerto Rico has plenty of beaches that offer exciting surfing, and therefore kite surfing, conditions.
It is imperative that would-be kite surfers take lessons from an experienced kite surfer. Learning to fly a kite on land will save valuable time and avoid unnecessary frustration once you take to the water. Kite surfing trainer kites will allow you to gain very necessary kite flying skills while having a whole lot of fun. Novices need to be aware that the force that the wind has on a kite on a windy day can be very powerful, so being able to direct the kite in a controlled manner is essential. In addition to building kite flying skills, you need to practice your balancing skills. If you already know how to surf, wakeboard, or snowboard, or are adept at skateboarding, those skills will be carried over to kite surfing. If not, a balance board, which can be bought from most good sport supply stores, can help you to improve your balance, strength, endurance and overall performance for any board sport and will certainly help you when it comes to kite surfing. Once you are comfortable with flying the trainer kite and your balancing skills are up to scratch, it is time to rise to the challenge of kite surfing – with the help of an expert.
There is no doubt that Puerto Rico is a beautiful country with plenty to offer holidaymakers. Why not try your hand at kite surfing in some of the most scenic spots of the Caribbean.
